How does it work?

IPL delivers specific wavelengths of light which interact with red and brown pigments in the skin

We use a Lumecca IPL device which emits high-intensity pulses of light that penetrate the skin at different depths. The light is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in dark spots, freckles, and age spots, as well as the hemoglobin in blood vessels, like those causing redness or rosacea. The absorbed light energy is converted into heat, which breaks down and targets unwanted pigmentation or damaged blood vessels. This heat also stimulates collagen production, which helps improve skin texture and reduces fine lines and wrinkles.

IPL selectively targets specific skin concerns while leaving the surrounding healthy skin tissue unaffected. The body gradually absorbs and clears away the broken-down pigment or damaged blood vessels, leading to clearer, more even-toned skin over time.

At KINS we offer a Signature Protocol combining Lumecca IPL, Polynucleotides and Dermalux Tri-Wave LED. This is an advanced skincare approach aimed at improving overall skin appearance, rejuvenation, and specific concerns like pigmentation, texture, and ageing and is a powerful and holistic treatment for skin rejuvenation.

FAQs

What does IPL do?
  • Improves Skin Tone and Texture: IPL helps reduce pigmentation, age spots, and redness, promoting a more even skin tone
  • Reduces Acne and Acne Scars: The treatment targets bacteria and reduces inflammation
  • Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles: IPL stimulates collagen production, which helps to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles
  • Minimises Sun Damage: It helps treat sunspots, freckles, and sun damage, leading to clearer and healthier skin
  • Non-invasive and Minimal Downtime: IPL is a non-surgical procedure with little recovery time, making it convenient for most people

The ideal candidate for IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment typically has the following characteristics:

  • Fair to Medium Skin Tones: IPL works best on individuals with light to medium skin tones, as it targets pigmentation differences
  • Sun Damage or Age Spots: Ideal for those with sunspots, freckles, or age spots that result from sun exposure
  • Mild to Moderate Acne: Those with active acne or acne scars can benefit from IPL’s anti-inflammatory and bacteria-targeting effects
  • Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Individuals looking to reduce the appearance of fine lines and early signs of ageing
  • No Active Skin Conditions: Ideal candidates are generally free of active skin conditions like eczema, rosacea, or open wounds, as IPL may irritate these issues

Right after your IPL treatment, you may experience some redness or slight swelling, which usually subsides within a few hours to a day. Some people may experience bruising in the area treated. This is normal and should not be a cause for concern.

Areas of pigmentation typically darken immediately after treatment. This pigmentation will eventually start to fall away

You may notice an overall improvement in skin tone, with a more radiant, even complexion after 2 weeks. Fine lines and wrinkles may begin to appear less noticeable due to improved skin texture.

The results of IPL can last anywhere from 6 months to 1 year, however, this can vary depending on the individual and the specific skin concerns being treated.

Skin Type and Condition: Individuals with more sensitive or damaged skin may see results fade faster than someone with healthier skin. If you’re treating issues like pigmentation, sun damage, or broken capillaries, you may need maintenance treatments to keep the results looking fresh.

Treatment Area: Areas that are exposed to the sun more frequently (like the face) may require more upkeep. Sun protection is crucial after an IPL treatment, as sun exposure can cause the treated areas to age faster.

Lifestyle Factors: Smoking, poor diet, and high levels of stress can negatively impact the longevity of IPL results. Healthy habits like staying hydrated, using sunscreen, and avoiding excessive sun exposure will help prolong results.

Frequency of Treatments: Typically, multiple sessions are recommended for optimal results. Usually a series of 3-4 treatments spaced about 3 weeks apart is common. After the initial course, a touch-up session every 6 to 12 months can help maintain results.

Usually, 1-3 IPL sessions is recommended, spaced about 3 to 4 weeks apart.

After completing the initial series of treatments, you may move to maintenance sessions. These are typically recommended every 6 to 12 months, depending on your skin type, concerns, and how your skin responds to the treatments.

Signature protocol: We use a layering approach by combining Lumecca IPL, Polynucleotides and Dermalux Tri-Wave LED. When done together these treatments compliment each other to achieve better results as we are targeting different layers and skin concerns in one go. Another benefit of combining treatments is there is only one period of downtime. The LED post procedure speeds up healing and recovery minimising downtime even more.

The intense barrier repair facial is a protocol combining the CO2 mask and LED therapy. At Kins we love getting the most out of every treatment and want the best results. By combining both of these treatments we can achieve an exaggerated skin rejuvenation result. Both treatments help healing and inflammation and are collagen and elastin boosting but through different methods. The ultimate TLC for your skin.

At Kins we love combining treatments as it means you can achieve more impactful results. This is also of benefit when life is busy as less appointments are needed and there is only one period of downtime.

There are certain contraindications where Lumecca IPL should be avoided or modified. These include:

1. Active Skin Infections or Inflammation: If you have an active infection (e.g., cold sores, bacterial infections) or inflammation (e.g., eczema, psoriasis), you should avoid Lumecca IPL as it may worsen these conditions.

2. Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: We advise avoiding IPL treatments during pregnancy due to the lack of conclusive safety data. Hormones are also still settling down post-partum and can have an impact on your skin.

3. Tanned or Sunburned Skin: Having a tan, sunburn, or any type of skin discoloration (even from tanning products) can increase the risk of complications, as the skin is more sensitive to light-based treatments when it’s not in its normal color.

4. Use of Photosensitising Medications: Certain medications, such as those used for acne (e.g., Accutane) or some antibiotics (e.g., tetracyclines), can make your skin more sensitive to light, increasing the risk of burns or hyperpigmentation. You should avoid IPL if you are taking these types of medications or consult your doctor for specific guidance.

5. History of/active skin Cancer or other Cancer: If you have active skin cancer or a history of it, particularly in the areas being treated, IPL should be avoided because of the risk of stimulating the growth of abnormal cells.

6. Melasma (Pregnancy Mask): While Lumecca IPL can help treat pigmentation, it may not be effective or appropriate for melasma (a form of hyperpigmentation, often related to pregnancy) and can sometimes make it worse.

7. Dark Skin Types (Fitzpatrick Skin Type IV-VI): People with darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin type IV, V, or VI) are at an increased risk of pigmentation changes (hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation). Lumecca IPL is usually recommended for lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin types I-III), as darker skin absorbs more light, making it difficult to achieve safe results.

8. Endocrine disorders (uncontrolled Diabetes): Individuals with uncontrolled diabetes may have slower healing responses, which can make them more susceptible to side effects such as burns or scarring from IPL treatments.

9. Autoimmune Disorders or Photosensitivity Disorders: Conditions like lupus or other autoimmune disorders may make your skin more sensitive to light, which can increase the risk of adverse effects from IPL treatments.

10. Recent Chemical Peels or Laser Treatments: If you have recently undergone chemical peels or other laser treatments, your skin may be too sensitive for IPL. It’s advisable to wait a few weeks (as recommended by your provider) before undergoing IPL after such treatments.

11. Permanent Makeup or Tattoos: IPL should not be applied over areas with permanent makeup, tattoos, or other pigment tattoos. The light may cause uneven pigment absorption or burns in these areas.

12. Open Wounds or Active Scarring: IPL should not be used on open wounds, cuts, or areas with fresh scarring as it may cause irritation or worsen the condition.

13. Heart Disease or Pacemaker: In rare cases, people with heart conditions or a pacemaker may need to avoid IPL treatments due to the device’s use of light energy, though this is generally more of a concern with certain types of laser treatments.

14. Disease stimulated by light: this would include solar urticaria or photosensitive epilepsy. IPL can trigger these conditions. It is our aim to ensure every treatment is carried out safely and adverse reactions are avoided.

15. Connective tissue disorders and keloid scarring: People with connective tissue disorders often have skin that is more fragile, thinner, or more prone to injury. The heat generated by IPL could potentially cause burns, irritation, poor healing, or other adverse effects on these sensitive skin types. The heat from the IPL can also trigger the skin’s healing response, leading to further collagen production, which may contribute to the formation or enlargement of keloid scars.

16. Metal implant in treatment area: Please inform your therapist of any implants in treatment area. This allows us to preform the treatment safely.

A consultation will be performed prior to any procedures ensuring all treatments are carried out safely.

If you have any concerns regarding your eligibility for a treatment, you can get in touch or come in for a consultation and we can go through the best treatment options for you.
